Armed officers were called in and a police helicopter scrambled over a report that a gunman had fired a weapon in a village street.

Police descended on Claybrooke Parva, near Lutterworth, just after 1pm yesterday.

A member of the pubic had reported seeing a man who fired a gun into the air in Main Street.

Police said that despite an extensive search being carried out, the gunman was not found.

“Shortly after 1pm yesterday, police received a report that a man had been seen with a firearm in Main Road, Claybrooke Parva,” said a Leicestershire Police spokesperson.

“It was also reported that the firearm had been discharged into the air.

“In the interest of public and police safety, armed officers were deployed, but the man had left the area.

”No arrests have been made and inquiries into the incident are ongoing.”

A spokeswoman for the National Police Air Service confirmed it was called out to assist officers on the ground.

Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to call the police on 101.
